As much as I hate to admit it, our family is addicted to technology. First thing in the morning I am on the internet whether it is checking email, or a social network, or just surfing the web. Throughout the day we have constant access to a computer, our smart phones, or the IPad. While I was certainly looking forward to a vacation as a family to spend some time together, I had no idea how amazing five days of being disconnected would be for our marriage, our family.
A week ago we came back home from our vacation to the Adirondack's. While it has taken me a week just to get caught back up, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. We spent five days in one of our favorite places. It was also an opportunity to catch up with Gregg's family, which included introducing a few to Graham for the first time. I remember telling Gregg's brother, Mickey on our daily boat ride how "this place" is indescribable. Pictures don't do it justice.
However I know understand that what makes it so special is the unspoken meaning it holds to Gregg, to us as a couple and now a family of four.
(The last time we were able to visit the Adirondack's in the summer was twelve years ago when Gregg took me out to little island off of Clear Pond and asked me to be his wife...it certainly was just the start of our family has become).
So while the Adirondack's are undeniably beautiful with the mountain air, rocky cliffs, waterfalls, quaint little towns, or crystal clear lakes, it is really about the laughter on the screened in porch of camp. It is cocktails by the bonfire or boat house deck. It is the boat rides through scary narrow bridges as each passage opens to more breathtaking beauty. It is the home cooked meals. It is watching cousins reconnect on golf cart rides down "heart break hill". It is the rope swing. It is Graham's delight in waking up to a house full of excitement. It is lunch and shopping in Lake Placid. It is about getting lost on a mountain road and finding the beauty in not having a schedule to race home to. But mostly it is just to connect with family and friends we don't see often enough.
This trip was more than a check off our summer bucket list, it filled our hearts with enough happiness to last us until our next visit even if it is another twelve summers!! (Although no way will we let that much summer time pass til our next visit) .
It is amazing what happens when we "disconnect" with our gadgets or technology, and how simple happiness and fulfillment are achieved!
and I apologize for the picture overload
So in the craziness of our lives, getting back to the simplicity of things has reminded us how very blessed we are!
